Saturday Night Preview

Derek Kane Long has a lot going on right now.

In addition to winning races across the region and owning the successful Alabama Pipe and Supply Modified driven by Dave Mader III, Long has also targeted the Island Motors II Bombers track championship at Mobile International Speedway.

The first step in that process however is getting to victory lane this Saturday night, a difficult challenge considering the division has been dominated once again by Day Racing Team members Jayme Corry and Jimmy Day. The latter just came out of a self-imposed retirement on Apr. 20 to win his only planned start of the season in memory of Richard Wilkerson.

Point is – regardless of the driver – the Day Racing Team will have the cars to beat for the foreseeable future, a fact not lost on Long.

“This class is so competitive right now,” Long said. “What I like about that is you have to continually bring your A-game to not only finish, but finish well. This year’s roster is the best I have ever raced against over the years and now we have to take the fight to them.”

Kane enters this weekend eighth in the standings and considers that a solid start when looking at the depth of the field on a weekly basis.

“I think the bomber class has been some of the best racing at the track this year,” Long said. “We have also consistently been the class with the most cars.”

Jimmy Day snapped his young protégés two-race win streak so Jayme Corry is looking to start a new streak. Opening weekend race-winner Tracy Soles and “King of the Bombers” Rusty Powell Sr. will also be in the mix as well.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

Mark Barnhill held off a hard-charging Steve Buttrick on Apr. 20 to end the latter’s incredible eight-race winning streak to open the season at both Mobile International Speedway and Pensacola’s Five Flags Speedway.

Buttrick was involved in an early race accident and just ran out of time despite maintaining his pace as the fastest driver in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman division.

Buttrick will be out to start a new streak on Saturday night and prove what happened two weeks ago was just an anomaly. Unless teams have stepped up their game over the past few weeks, it’s looking incredibly likely that the championship could be secured in a matter of months.

But it won’t come easy as Lee Reynolds, Brannon Fowler and Chad Robinson have each had time to prepare for the upcoming summer stretch.

It is Jay Jay Day’s World and we’re just living in it.

The Day Racing Team is looking to go back-to-back to open the season but will have to deal with Okie Mason, and Steve Stagner to maintain the family’s dominance at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.

Grandstands open at 4:00PM on Saturday with grandstand admission: $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors, Military, First Responders and Students aged 12-17. Kids 6-11 get in for $5 and those 5 and under get in FREE. Pit passes run $25. Everyone under the age of 19 must have a signed parental consent form.
